PAST SIMPLE
AFFIRMATIVE: subject+verb in past simple (2nd column of irregular verbs, regular verbs add -ed).
NEGATIVE: subject+ did not (didn't) + verb in base form
INTERROGATIVE:  (wh- Word) + did+ subject+ verb in  base form ?

                                            Short answers: Yes, I did
                                                                      No, I didn't

    REGULAR VERBS:

  • SPELLING: Regular verbs add -ed to form the past simple Ex: clean....cleaned.
But some verbs change a bit when adding -ed:
                * verbs ending in Consonant+stressed short vowel+ consonant: double consonant+-ed:
                                                                    Ex:    stop...stopped
                * verbs ending in -e only add -d:
                                                                    Ex: like....liked
                * verbs ending in consonant+y, change "y" by "i" and add -ed:
                                                                    Ex:try......tried.

  • PRONUNCIATION: the -ed can be pronounced in three different ways according to the final sound of the base form of the verb
    •  [ɪd]: if the verb ends in  [t,d]. Ex: visit /vIzIt/......visited /vɪzɪtɪd/
    • [t]:verbs ending in  a voiceless consonant [p, k, f, ʃ, ʧ, s, θ] (p,k,f,sh,ch,s,th).              Ex: stop.....stopped  [stɒpt]
    • [d]:verbs ending in a voiced consonant [b, g, v, ʒ, ʤ, z, ð, l, m, n] or a vowel              Ex: clean .....cleaned [kli:nd]
